Business Boroondara Network and Swinburne Learning Exchange

The following pages provide an interim guide to the resources developed in this project. The complete demonstration will be available shortly.

This is an industry e-learning demonstration developed the City of Boroondara in partnership with Swinburne University, a relationship which began in 1999. The Business Boroondara Network (BBN) aims to create new, flexible and accessible opportunities for small business operators in the City of Boroondara, Victoria. The BBN now has over 1200 members.

This project has developed the Swinburne Learning Exchange and the BBN Forum connecting small business operators to a wealth of learning resources and opportunities for formal and informal learning. The Learning Exchange provides access to selected units from Swinburne University from the Certificate IV in Business (Small Business Management), the Graduate Certificate of Business (Small Business Management) and the Diploma of eCommerce. Each unit in the Learning Exchange includes Information about the course, a Taster Topic and Learning Guide, and a discussion forum.

The Taster Topics enable small business operators to engage with topics from an accredited unit. A step-by-step Learning Guide provides instructions for participants on how to proceed through the topic; learning resources are also provided. Evidence generated as part of the Taster Topics may form evidence for Recognition of Prior Learning if participants wish to formally enrol and gain recognition and accreditation.

The forums enable small business operators to interact with the forum facilitator and other BBN members who are also engaged with the topics of interest. The forum feature may also be used to facilitate self-managed special interest groups.

The Business Boroondara Network and Swinburne Learning Exchange adds a new dimension to assisting network members to gain skills and knowledge through integrating networking, informal learning and formal learning. The Boroondara City Council and Swinburne University will maintain this initiative adding useful resources and building higher levels of engagement and interaction from small business operators.
